The price of being accountable to patients and the Hippocratic Oath – the story of the arrest of Dr Samir Biswas in West Bengal, India

An interesting story is forwarded to you from the newspaper reports on the arrest of Dr. Samir Biswas who is charged under sedition and anti-state activities for allegedly treating the armed militants. It raises number of questions: Who is a good doctor? One who is mediator for the corporates (Pharma Companies) or the one who has interest of patients at the heart  of professional ethics? Irrespective of the  brand of the ruling party, it typifies how does a state view  persons  who do not toe the dominant line of thought and defy diktats  to follow one’s convictions to be accountable to ‘patients’ needs.
